American Werewolves
I read Here Beside the Rising Tide by this author earlier this year. It was like a fever dream and I really liked it despite having a few elements that didn’t work so well for me. When Hyperion Avenue reached out with an early copy of this book, I thought, “why not?”
American Werewolves centers on a cast of characters—a poor boy from the 1800s named Bit, a woman (Natasha) who recently lost her roommate in a suspicious murder in Golden Gate Park (the bites looked animal, but not a dog?), and a rising star in the venture capitalism business, Shane. How are all these characters connected? You’ll have to read and find out.
This was another Emily Jane work that was strange in a good way. The characters were quirky. The plotlines, absurd. And there’s a great deal of social commentary under the surface including ideas about race, money, belonging, and the values and ideals of America. This took me out of my regular genres, but not in a way that was unwelcome.
Overall, Emily Jane’s books are a bit wacky and a fun and wild ride. Thank you, again, to NetGalley and Hyperion Ave for the opportunity to be an early reader of a digital review copy. This hit shelves on September 16th.

Nothing is particularly descriptive, but this does contain misogyny, child death, gore, violence, rape, sexual harassment, and homophobia. I may have also missed some other elements.
