Finding Grace
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital review copy of this title. This one hits shelves on July 8th.
This is one of those books that if I share a synopsis, it spoils the whole thing. I’d recommend going in blind, so how to review this book?
Let’s just say I was pretty blown away and captured almost immediately. We open with Honor and her husband and four-year-old daughter in Paris at the Ritz-Carlton for Christmas. Tensions are high between Honor and Tom as they’ve struggled for a long while trying to add another child to their family. The remainder of the book takes place years later after a shocking event changes their lives forever.
What did I love?
the exploration of grief and love
the point of view - a unique and shining star; it’s first-person but feels like third because it’s a near-god POV
the complicated character of Tom; he’s not a bad person, but his lies get the better of him
What might bother some audiences?
If you’re a hater of the “miscommunication” trope in romance, this may not be for you. While I wouldn’t categorize this as a romance book, dishonesty and concealing information is a huge part of this plot. It’s frustrating, at times
The plot is slow; in fact, at times it feels like nothing is happening. I think that worked in its favor, but you may disagree.
Overall, I loved the writing style, the story-framing, and the subtle and overt themes in this debut. I'll certainly be keeping my eyes open for more by Loretta Rothschild in the future.
