This was a cute rom-com set in a small town with lots of interconnected characters. I didn't read the first story in the "Rock Bottom Love" series, but I enjoyed the story of Jillian and Levi reconnecting after years apart. She's the younger sister of two of Levi's good friends, so she was off limits during high school. He left for on a culinary scholarship and hasn't been home to their island town in Michigan since. Jillian is recovering from hitting her rock bottom, returning home a couple years ago after a messy divorce including lies and financial indiscretion by her then-husband. She's gone into business with her brother, rehabilitating and old lodge.

This was a lighthearted and fun read. I especially liked Jillian's daughter and the interactions she had with Levi and her uncles. Her class trips and the town interactions with the lodge were great. I liked Levi's story arc with his father, the reasons why there is tension between them, and the slow and steady rebuilding of their relationship. The romance between Jillian and Levi was sweet and I appreciated the closed-door/fade-to-black aspect of this book; however, is it strange to say that there may have been too much kissing? Haha! For being a book with no intimate scenes, I felt like the build-up toward the FTB moments were a little overdrawn. The ending also did a good job of wrapping everything up, but there were multiple chapters that felt like "the end" of the book, if that makes sense. It almost felt like I read 3 epilogues instead of one cohesive finish to the story.

Overall, I would read more from this author. I enjoyed the sweetness and even dropped a couple of tears at some of the tender moments, but a couple tweaks could have taken this from good to great for me as a reader.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for the DRC. All thoughts are my own opinions and genuine reading reactions.

Some of my favorite quotes:

  • 🚪 This is a closed-door romance. There are no explicit scenes on-page. Content fades to black.
