Rae is more than a cancer patient, but after years of battling, she feels she’s at the end of her rope. One bright space in her life has been the way her younger sister has enveloped her in a fantasy book series. Through it, she has connected with her sister and also escaped some of her awful reality. When a mysterious stranger offers her a chance to change her future, she skeptically walks through a door that transports her directly into the book series. Instead of being a new character, she’s the evil stepsister, because of course she is. Rae knows she would never be the hero.

This book was so much fun. It had some twists and turns with clues along the way. I try to be along for the ride with this type of book, but I couldn’t help but make some predictions. I wasn’t completely caught off guard by the ending, but I was surprised enough that I’m eagerly awaiting the second book in the series. I’m interested to see how or if Rae will make it back home to our world and how she’ll fare as she continues in the fantasy.

I did struggle a little with the multiple points of view and wished for a tiny bit more differentiation. There were also lots of references to pop-culture and the FMCs buxomness and villainy (shared in a meta, laughing at fantasy tropes kind of way); these references were funny the first several times, but I grew a tad tired of them by the end.

Overall, I’m ready for the next jaunt in this fantasy world where I’m constantly questioning who are the heroes and who are the villains. And ultimately, how do we define each?

  • This book contains some suggestive material, but no full-blown intimate scenes on-page.
