Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Voyager for the digital review copy and the opportunity to be an early reader. This book hit shelves on October 14.

Clía is certain when Prince Domhnall arrives at her home it’s to make their betrothal official. They’re kingdoms are neighbors and they’ve been friends from childhood. A political alliance between them seems beneficial for everyone. But Domhnall comes with the message that she’s not strong enough to serve as queen to his kingdom. She’s too focused on parties and frivolity. Clía sets out to prove him wrong by arriving at the military academy where Domhnall is also studying.

Loosely inspired by the movie, Legally Blonde, this was overall very fun. I appreciated Clía’s determination to prove everyone wrong and to even use her love for dressmaking as an asset in battle rather than a side-hobby of no use.

I really liked the Irish folklore elements despite not knowing how to pronounce even a single name. 😂 This is where a pronunciation guide or an audiobook would have shined.

The cast of characters was interesting and I liked the development of romance between Clía and Domhnall’s captain of the guard, Ronan. I also liked the ways their characters developed, how they each underestimated themselves but believed in the other.

Unfortunately, this one fell short for me a bit in tone. The opening was so lighthearted and quick-witted, but the plot was much more about politics and war as the story progressed. I was expecting more laughter and a swifter pace and that was not the case in my experience.

Overall, this could have been a miss because of my false expectations. It was enjoyable, but not quite what I thought I’d signed up for.
