Cassie loves a genre-bender and Charlotte McConaghy has delivered. Why am I writing in the third-person right now? I’m not sure, but I think it has to do with excitement level.

Dominic Salt has been the caretaker of Shearwater Island near Antarctica for nearly a decade. He lives in the lighthouse with his three children while researchers study the land and animals while also maintaining the globe’s largest seed bank. But the waters are rising and will soon overtake the island completely. Weeks before their ship off the island arrives, a mysterious woman washes up on shore. Who is Rowan? And why is she really here?

First of all, the narration for this is incredible. I’m already a big fan of Saskia Maarleveld, and the other voices for this book match her talent.

I loved this, perhaps even more than I loved Once There Were Wolves, and that is saying something. McConaghy has a way of blending the tragic with hope. As the Salt family’s world is literally coming apart, they somehow heal and come together, and Rowan is a large part of that. Rowan is haunted by her own suffering, long past and fresh, and her interactions with the Salts brings her unexpected comfort and, at times, confusion about her own understanding of the world.

This book was about the environment and climate, sure. It was more about family, sacrifice, parenting, and what we do for the people we love. I cried a boatload of tears, and I can already tell you it’s sure to be a top read of the year.

  • 🌶️ This one includes a couple of vague intimate scenes, easily skipped.
