Nothing to See Here
Lillian went to high school with Madison, until Lillian took the fall for Madison’s bad behavior and got expelled. For years they’ve kept in touch through letters, Lillian staying stagnant and not achieving much while Madison soared: prestigious college, married to a senator, etc. When Madison’s twin step-kids come to live with her, she calls on Lillian to be a temporary caretaker, but they have a very peculiar condition. 🔥 BOOM!
This was funny, heart-wrenching, and uncomfortable more than once. Marin Ireland’s narration is superb. It’s full of odd characters and strange interactions. There were times I was incensed by the lack of care being offered to the children in this book. There were times when I got weepy at the fierce protection unlikely Lillian provides.
Overall, I enjoyed this odd and quirky magical realism book that stretched my imagination and the definition of “parent.”
