Run for the Hills
I really enjoyed listening to Nothing to See Here (expertly narrated by Marin Ireland) earlier this year and thought it was such a strangely delightful and magical-realist picture of parenthood. So, I was excited to see that Kevin Wilson had another book coming out this year.
Run for the Hills follows Mad (Madeline) Hill as she meets half-siblings Rube (Reuben), Pep (Pepper), and Tom (Theron) on a road trip to find the father who abandoned each of them. When Rube shows up on Mad’s farm in a bright red rented PT Cruiser, she doesn’t know what to expect. When he tells her he’s her half brother and that “there are more of them,” she surprises herself by agreeing to drive to California picking up new siblings along the way.
It’s a quirky and strange, unique story of found-family. I laughed a good deal and teared up here and there. I didn’t find it as compelling or powerful as Nothing to See Here, but overall I still enjoyed it and will likely keep picking up books by this author.
Have you read anything by Kevin Wilson? Do you have any favorite books featuring road trips or found-family?
